R-22 Phase Out – What You Need to Know

R-22 Phase Out

View the PDF

Over the past few years, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has begun slowly phasing out R-22, a commonly used air conditioning refrigerant. This phase out began with increasing prices and reduced production. We are now in the final phase out and new R-22 will no longer be available in the U.S. beginning January 1st, 2020.

If you have an older air conditioning system, you’ve probably already noticed prices and repair costs rising. It’s important to learn all you can about the R-22 phase out and what it means for your HVAC system.

About R-22

R-22, also known as HCFC-22, was first introduced in the 1950s. Until recently, this powerful refrigerant worked hard to keep the air coming out of air conditioning units around the United States cool. Unfortunately, it was later discovered that R-22 is extremely bad for the environment.

R-22 is a type of hydro chlorofluorocarbon (HCFC). These substances are scientifically proven to deplete the ozone layer, increasing the risk of skin cancer from UV radiation.

Phase out of R-22 began in 2003 but it wasn’t until early 2010 that production and import of R-22 decreased. If your air conditioning unit was installed before 2010, it’s likely it uses R-22 to keep your home or office space cool.

How the R-22 Phase Out Will Affect You

Even though there will be no new R-22 produced or imported beginning next year, it is still possible to have existing equipment serviced as long as there is an available supply of recovered, reclaimed, and previously existing refrigerant in the United States. However, it’s important to note that as the amount of R-22 decreases, the cost of available supplies will go up. There are also extremely strict regulations on how refrigerant should be reclaimed and recycled. This raises prices as well.

Although servicing an older air conditioning system is possible, it might not be the best option. Purchasing a newer system is better for the environment and costs less than continuing to service an older unit which is more prone to leaks and breakdowns. Another option is to retrofit your existing system. This involves converting it from R-22 to a more environmentally friendly refrigerant. An experienced HVAC specialist can help you determine the best option for your needs and budget.

To Tell if Your Air Conditioning Unit Uses R-22

If your air conditioning unit was built before 2010 it likely uses R-22. If it was built after 2010, it may or may not have R-22. The best way to determine the type of refrigerant your system uses is by checking the nameplate on the outside condenser of your central air conditioning system.
